The Institute is redesigned this year to be more responsive to the educational realities of 2012.

It is time to...

• Focus foremost on the learner and the learning process
• Create curriculum and instruction that shifts the cognitive load from teacher to student
• Create curriculum and instruction that will prepare young people to live well and contribute positively to our modern world, and
• Cultivate the capacities most needed to do be able to do so, emphasizing:

1. Enduring understandings that transcend content
2. Creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving
3. Self-knowledge and self-refection
4. Collaboration and teamwork
5. Communication and literacy
6. Empathy & Tolerance
7. Global Awareness

Participants will leave the Institute with:

• Knowledge and skills needed to cultivate learning that is engaging, challenging and meaningful
• Enduring understandings needed to shift from teacher-centered to learner-centered classrooms
• Tools, Protocols and Approaches to enrich curriculum and instruction plans
• A Product:  A personalized plan for powerful, customized learning to execute back at school

This year’s program will model the four tenets of Powerful Learning, and as such will provide teams and individuals with the best environment in which to learn, grow and produce. The Institute staff will serve as coaches ready with knowledge, tools, wisdom and guidance.

Individuals and teams are encouraged to come with an idea in mind that they want to shape into a relevant and significant learning project for their students.
